How to care for Amazonian Elephant Ear

sunlight

Although this is a hybrid, its Alocasia parents grow beneath tropical forest canopies. Give it bright, filtered light at home to support strong stems and bold leaf patterning.

Bright indirect light

Place near an east window, or a little back from a south or west window behind a sheer curtain. Direct midday or afternoon sun can scorch and fade the dark leaves.

Medium indirect light - tolerated

It can manage a brighter room away from the window, but growth will slow and new leaves may be smaller. Move it closer if it stretches or produces less defined foliage.

If you cannot read comfortably near the plant for much of the day without switching on a light, it is probably too dim.

watering

Keep the mix lightly moist, never constantly wet. Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry, then let excess drain away.

Spring and summer

In bright, warm conditions, this is often about every 5-8 days. Check the soil first: it should be dry near the surface but still faintly moist deeper in the root ball.

Autumn and winter

With lower light and slower growth, water roughly every 10-14 days, or only after the top half of the pot has dried. Cool rooms, dense soil, and large pots stay wet longer.

Lift the pot after watering and again before the next drink. A noticeably lighter pot is often a more reliable cue than the calendar.

Bright light, warmth, a small terracotta pot, and an airy mix make the soil dry faster. Low light, high humidity, a plastic pot, or a plant with few active roots mean less frequent watering.

Do not leave Amazonian Elephant Ear sitting in runoff. Soggy roots can quickly lead to yellowing leaves and root rot.

humidity

Preferred humidity

60-80%

Its tropical Alocasia parentage suits warm, humid air. It can manage typical home humidity around 40-60%, but grows and unfurls leaves more reliably above 50%.

Avoid prolonged dryness

Below 40%

Crisp brown edges, curling leaves, and new leaves that tear or stick while opening usually point to dry air, especially near heating or air conditioning.

A small humidifier near the plant is the most effective way to raise humidity.
  • Keep it away from radiators, vents, and drafty windows.
  • Group it with other plants to slightly soften dry air.
  • Use a hygrometer and aim for steady conditions rather than frequent misting.

temperature

Preferred temperature

18-27°C (65-80°F)

Winter minimum

15°C (59°F)

This hybrid inherits the warm, steady conditions of tropical Alocasia species. Keep it comfortably warm year-round, with gentle airflow but no sudden swings.

Place it away from cold windows, exterior doors, and heating or air-conditioning vents, especially overnight.
Temperatures below 15°C (59°F) or cold drafts can trigger yellowing leaves and stalled growth.

nutrition

March - August

Feed every 2-4 weeks while the plant is producing new leaves, using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at about half the label strength. Apply to already moist soil. Stop feeding in autumn and winter unless it is still growing steadily in warm, bright conditions.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen supports the large, dark leaves. A regular balanced fertilizer provides enough without pushing soft, weak growth.

Flush the pot with plain water every few months to wash away fertilizer salts, especially if leaf edges turn brown despite good watering.

soil

Chunky, moisture-retentive soil

Alocasia roots like steady moisture but need plenty of air around them, so use a loose aroid-style mix. Combine houseplant potting mix with orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and a little coco coir to hold moisture without becoming heavy.

pH 5,5 - 6,5

This is slightly acidic, which suits nutrient uptake. Most fresh peat- or coco-based houseplant mixes fall close to this range, so there is usually no need to adjust pH unless you use very alkaline water or soil.

Choose a pot with drainage holes, and repot if the mix stays soggy for more than a week after watering.
