How to care for Arabian Jasmine

sunlight

Arabian Jasmine grows in warm, sunny tropical conditions. Give it the brightest spot you have indoors to support compact growth and plenty of fragrant flowers.

Full sun

Place it in a south or west-facing window, ideally with about 4-6 hours of direct sun daily. Bright indirect light is tolerated, but flowering will be lighter and growth may stretch.

If leaves pale or scorch after a sudden move into strong sun, acclimate the plant over a week or two.

watering

Keep Arabian jasmine evenly moist, but never let it sit in water. Its roots need regular moisture while growing and blooming, plus plenty of air in the potting mix.

Warm, bright growing season

Water thoroughly about every 3-5 days, or when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry. Let excess drain fully. Hot sun, active flowering, small pots, and porous terracotta can make it dry faster.

Cooler or lower-light months

Expect to water roughly every 7-14 days. Check deeper than the surface and wait until the top 1-2 inches are dry, especially if growth has slowed.

Lift the pot after watering and again before the next drink. A much lighter pot is a useful cue, but do not wait for repeated wilting.
Constantly wet soil can quickly cause root rot. Use a pot with drainage and empty any saucer after watering.

humidity

Preferred humidity

50-70%

Arabian Jasmine comes from warm, humid tropical regions and flowers best with moderately humid air. Most homes are suitable at 40-50%, especially with steady watering, but avoid prolonged air below 40%.

Dry air can cause crisp brown leaf edges, slow growth, and unopened buds to drop.

How to increase humidity

  • Run a humidifier nearby during heated winter months, aiming for about 50%.
  • Group plants together or place the pot on a pebble tray with water, keeping the pot above the waterline.
  • Keep it away from heating vents and strong air conditioning, which dry the leaves quickly.

Good airflow still matters. Do not keep foliage constantly wet, especially in cooler or dim conditions.

temperature

Preferred range

18-27°C (65-80°F)

Winter minimum

10°C (50°F)

Arabian Jasmine comes from warm tropical climates, so it flowers and grows best in steady warmth. Keep it above 10°C (50°F) and away from chilly windows in winter. Brief heat above 27°C (80°F) is fine with regular watering and airflow.

Place it where temperatures stay stable, such as a bright room away from exterior doors and heating vents.
Cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F) can cause leaf drop and bud loss.

nutrition

March - August

Feed every 2-4 weeks while your Arabian jasmine is making new growth or buds, using a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to about half strength. Stop feeding in winter, or when growth has slowed in lower light.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen supports the leafy growth that fuels flowering. A balanced fertilizer supplies enough without pushing soft, leafy growth at the expense of blooms.

Potassium

Potassium supports sturdy growth and flower production. Use a fertilizer intended for flowering houseplants if your plant is growing well but setting few buds.

Apply fertilizer to already-moist soil, not a dry root ball, to reduce the risk of root burn and fertilizer salt buildup.

soil

Rich, airy, free-draining soil

Arabian jasmine likes steady moisture around its roots but declines in dense, waterlogged compost. Use a quality potting mix loosened with perlite or coarse bark, with a little compost for nutrients.

pH 6,0 - 7,0

This is slightly acidic to neutral, a range that helps jasmine take up nutrients well. Most fresh indoor potting mixes suit it, so there is usually no need to adjust the pH.

Choose a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer after watering so the roots never sit in water.
