How to care for Cast Iron Plant
sunlight
Cast Iron Plant grows on shaded forest floors, so it is happiest away from harsh window sun. Its dark green leaves handle dim rooms well, but grow more steadily in gentle indirect light.
Low light
Tolerated well in rooms with limited natural light, several feet from a window or near a north-facing window. Growth will be slow, so water less often and expect fewer new leaves.
Medium indirect light
Best for fuller, steadier growth. Place near an east or north window, or set it back from a bright south or west window behind a sheer curtain. Direct sun can bleach or scorch the leaves. Variegated forms need this brighter indirect light to keep their markings.
watering
Let the compost dry well between waterings. Cast Iron Plant tolerates a missed drink far better than constantly damp roots.
Spring - summer
Water thoroughly about every 2-3 weeks, once the top half of the potting mix feels dry. Empty the saucer after watering so the roots do not sit in water.
Autumn - winter
In lower light and cooler rooms, water roughly every 3-5 weeks. Check deeper than the surface before watering, as a slow-growing plant in shade uses very little moisture.
Watering may be needed sooner in warm, brighter rooms or porous terracotta, and less often in a large pot, dense mix, or cool conditions.
humidity
Preferred humidity
Cast Iron Plant comes from humid forest understories, but it adapts well to average homes. It is usually comfortable above about 30% humidity, especially when kept away from drying heat or air conditioning.
How to increase humidity
- Group it with other plants, or use a small humidifier nearby.
- Keep it away from radiators, heating vents, and constant drafts.
- Wipe dust from the leaves so the plant can make the most of its low-light spot.
temperature
Preferred temperature
Winter minimum
Cast Iron Plant comes from sheltered forest floors in East Asia, so it prefers steady indoor warmth rather than extremes. It handles average rooms well, but growth slows in cool conditions and hot, dry air can brown leaf tips.
nutrition
March - August
Feed about once a month with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half the label strength, applied to already moist soil. This slow-growing plant needs little food, so stop feeding in autumn and winter unless it is clearly making new growth.
Nitrogen
Nitrogen supports the long, deep green leaves. A balanced fertilizer provides enough without pushing soft, weak growth.
Potassium
Potassium supports overall plant resilience and helps the foliage stay sturdy. It is included in most balanced houseplant fertilizers.
soil
Rich, airy soil that holds some moisture
Cast iron plants prefer an organic-rich mix that stays lightly moist but does not become dense or waterlogged. Combine regular potting mix with perlite or fine bark to keep air around the roots.
pH 5,5 - 6,5
This is slightly acidic soil, which most quality indoor potting mixes provide. Choose a peat- or coco-based mix and avoid adding lime unless a soil test shows it is needed.
