How to care for Common Fig

sunlight

Common figs grow in open, sunny Mediterranean landscapes. Give yours the brightest spot you have: strong direct sun supports sturdy growth and the best chance of fruit.

Full sun

Aim for about 6-8 hours of direct sun daily. Outdoors, use an open, unshaded position. Indoors, place it close to a south- or west-facing window; low light often means long, weak growth and little fruit.

Turn a container-grown fig every week or two so all sides receive even light and growth stays balanced.

Water deeply, then wait until the upper 1-2 inches of soil dries before watering again. Figs dislike constantly wet roots.

Active growth and fruiting

For a container fig, this is often about every 3-7 days in warm, sunny weather. Water slowly until excess drains out, then check soil rather than following the calendar. An in-ground tree usually needs a deep soak about weekly only during prolonged dry spells.

Keep moisture fairly even while fruit is swelling. Letting a dry pot become soaked can cause fruit to split.

Cool weather and dormancy

Once leaves drop or growth slows, a container fig may need water roughly every 2-4 weeks. Water only when the soil is dry well below the surface and the pot feels light. Rain usually covers an established garden tree unless conditions stay unusually dry.

Heat, wind, strong light, a small terracotta pot, and a fast-draining mix make soil dry faster. Cool shade, a large pot, and reduced root activity slow it down.

Never leave the pot standing in water. Soggy soil can quickly lead to root rot, especially when the tree is dormant.

Common figs come from regions with hot summers and cool winters. Give them warmth and full sun while growing, then let deciduous plants rest somewhere cool and frost-free after leaf drop. Keep actively growing indoor figs away from cold glass and heating vents.

For a potted fig, an unheated but frost-free garage or shed is often ideal for winter rest.
Container roots are less cold-hardy than roots in the ground. Protect potted figs from hard freezes, especially young plants and less hardy cultivars.

Feed container figs every 2-4 weeks while they are making new leaves and fruit, using a balanced liquid fruit-tree fertilizer at about half the label strength. Once fruits begin forming, a fertilizer with extra potassium is useful. Established figs in the ground usually need only a spring compost mulch unless growth is weak. Stop feeding as growth slows in late summer and do not feed dormant plants.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen supports the large leaves that power growth. Use it moderately: too much can produce lush shoots at the expense of fruit.

Potassium

Potassium supports fruit development and ripening. It matters most for fruiting container figs after the first small figs appear.

Feed only after watering, and flush the pot with plain water occasionally to prevent fertilizer salts building up.

Deep, fertile, free-draining soil

Common figs root best in a loamy mix that holds some moisture and nutrients but lets excess water escape quickly. Blend quality potting soil with compost and perlite, pumice, or coarse sand, and use a pot with drainage holes.

pH 6,0 - 6,5

This is slightly acidic to near-neutral, a good range for nutrient uptake. Most all-purpose potting mixes suit figs well. If using garden soil, improve heavy clay with compost and gritty material rather than trying to change the pH drastically.

Choose a sturdy, roomy pot: figs dislike waterlogged roots, but a container that dries out very quickly can limit fruit growth.
