How to care for Leaf Lettuce

sunlight

Full sun in cool weather

Give leaf lettuce about 6 hours of direct sun daily in spring or fall. More light keeps growth compact and productive when temperatures stay cool.

Part sun in warm weather

In warm weather, provide morning sun and afternoon shade. Hot, intense afternoon sun can make leaves bitter and encourage bolting.

On a windowsill, choose the brightest spot available, but move the pot out of harsh afternoon sun if leaves wilt despite moist soil.

watering

Keep leaf lettuce evenly moist, never waterlogged. Its shallow roots dry quickly, and uneven watering can make leaves bitter or tough.

Cool, active growth

In spring and fall, water about every 2-4 days in containers, or when the top 1 cm of soil feels dry. Soak the root zone until water drains, then empty any saucer.

Warm or sunny weather

Check daily in heat, wind, or bright sun. Small pots may need water every day, sometimes twice on very hot days. Water promptly if leaves soften, but confirm the soil is drying rather than watering on a fixed schedule.

Cool, low-light conditions

Growth slows in cool, dim weather, so water roughly every 5-7 days. Check below the surface before watering: soil should feel lightly moist, not saturated throughout the pot.

Water early in the day and aim at the soil, so leaves dry quickly and stay cleaner.

Light, heat, wind, pot size, and a fast-draining mix all increase water use. A heavy pot and persistently wet soil mean it is time to wait.

Do not leave lettuce sitting in water. Soggy roots can rot quickly, especially in cool weather.

humidity

Preferred humidity

50-70%

Leaf lettuce grows best in cool, moderately humid conditions with steady airflow. Most homes at 40-60% relative humidity are suitable, especially if the soil is kept evenly moist.

Air below about 40% can make leaf edges crisp or brown, cause young leaves to expand poorly, and make plants wilt quickly between waterings. Very humid, still air encourages mildew and rot.

Use a small humidifier nearby if indoor heating makes the air very dry, but keep air moving around the leaves.
  • Check humidity near the plant, not across the room.
  • Do not mist regularly or leave foliage wet overnight.
  • Space plants so leaves dry quickly after watering.

temperature

Best growing temperature

10-21°C (50-70°F)

Winter minimum

4°C (40°F)

Leaf lettuce is a cool-season crop from the Mediterranean region. Keep it cool for steady, tender growth: warmth speeds up flowering and can make leaves bitter.

Place pots near a bright, cool window, away from radiators and warm appliances.
Sustained temperatures above 24°C (75°F) can trigger bolting. Harvest promptly and move the plant somewhere cooler if the central stem starts stretching.

nutrition

March - October

Feed every 2-3 weeks while plants are actively making leaves, using a balanced liquid vegetable fertilizer at about half strength. In compost-rich garden soil, a light feed once or twice is usually enough. Stop feeding when growth slows in heat or after harvest.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen supports the lush, green leaf growth you harvest. Steady, modest feeding is better than heavy doses, which can make leaves soft and more prone to problems.

Potassium

Potassium helps plants use water well and maintain sturdy, productive growth. A balanced vegetable fertilizer supplies it alongside nitrogen.

Apply fertilizer to already-moist soil, then water lightly. Brown leaf edges or a white crust on the soil can mean fertilizer salts are building up.

soil

Loose, fertile, moisture-retentive soil

Leaf lettuce has shallow roots that grow best in soil that stays evenly moist but never soggy. Use a loose potting mix enriched with compost, and add perlite or coarse sand if it feels dense or drains slowly.

pH 6,0 - 7,0

This is slightly acidic to neutral, a range that helps lettuce take up nutrients well. Most vegetable or all-purpose potting mixes are suitable, and adding compost helps keep the soil gently buffered.

Choose a pot with drainage holes and at least 15 cm of soil depth so roots have room to spread.
