How to care for Mondo Grass

sunlight

In its woodland habitat, mondo grass grows beneath trees in filtered light. Give it a shaded spot or gentle indirect light indoors, away from hot glass.

Shade or low indirect light

A good choice for north-facing rooms or spots set back from a brighter window. Growth will be slower, but green forms stay tidy and healthy.

Bright indirect light

This encourages fuller growth, especially on variegated cultivars. Use filtered light near an east window or set it a little back from a south or west window.

Keep it out of strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaf tips and fade variegated foliage.

watering

Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry, then let excess drain away. Mondo grass prefers lightly, evenly moist soil while growing but declines in constantly wet compost.

Spring and summer

Check about once a week and water roughly every 5-10 days in a pot, after the upper layer has dried. Bright light, warmth, small pots, and porous mixes speed drying; shaded or large pots stay wet longer.

Autumn and winter

Growth slows in cooler, lower light conditions, so water roughly every 2-3 weeks. Let the top 3-5 cm dry first, and check deeper in the root ball if the pot still feels heavy.

Lift the pot before watering: a noticeably lighter pot is a more reliable cue than the calendar.
Never leave the pot standing in water. Soggy soil can cause root rot and yellowing leaves.

humidity

Preferred humidity

40-60%

Native to humid woodland edges in East Asia, mondo grass appreciates moderate humidity but is more forgiving than many houseplants. Average household air is usually fine, especially in a cool room.

It can tolerate around 30-40% humidity, but prolonged dry air, particularly near heating vents, may cause brown leaf tips or crisp edges. Dry soil can produce similar symptoms, so check moisture before increasing humidity.

Keep it away from radiators and forced-air vents to prevent dry, scorched-looking tips.
  • Group plants together to create a slightly more humid pocket of air.
  • Use a small humidifier nearby during the heating season if tips repeatedly brown.

temperature

Preferred range

15-27°C (59-80°F)

Winter minimum

Approx. -12°C (10°F)

Native to East Asian woodland edges, mondo grass is comfortable in ordinary indoor temperatures and handles summer warmth best in shade with evenly moist soil. Established plants in the ground tolerate brief winter cold, but container roots need more protection.

Move potted plants to a sheltered spot before temperatures fall below -12°C (10°F), and keep them away from hot radiators indoors.
Cold, drying wind can brown evergreen leaves even when temperatures stay above -12°C (10°F).

nutrition

March - August

Feed about once a month while new leaves are growing, using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Water first, then fertilize moist soil. Stop feeding in autumn and winter unless the plant is actively making new growth in warm, bright conditions.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen supports the dense green leaves. A regular, gentle feed is enough - heavy feeding can cause soft growth and brown leaf tips.

If white crust forms on the soil or leaf tips brown despite suitable watering, pause fertilizer and flush the pot thoroughly with water.

soil

Moisture-retentive, well-draining soil

Mondo grass likes soil that holds some moisture without becoming heavy or waterlogged. Use a good-quality potting mix with compost or coco coir, and add perlite or fine bark if it stays wet for too long.

pH 5,5 - 6,5

This is slightly acidic soil, which suits its roots well. Most all-purpose potting mixes fall close to this range, so avoid strongly alkaline garden soil or repeated lime applications.

Use a pot with drainage holes, especially indoors, as soggy soil can rot the roots.
