How to care for Papyrus

sunlight

In open, sunny wetlands, papyrus receives strong light for much of the day. Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally with some direct sun.

Bright indirect light - tolerated

It can grow near a very bright east or west window, especially if direct sun is limited. Growth may be slower and stems less sturdy than in fuller sun.

Full sun - ideal

A sunny south-facing window or a bright patio suits it well. Acclimate an indoor plant to stronger direct sun over about a week to prevent leaf scorch.

Keep the pot close to the glass: papyrus needs more light than most houseplants, and pale, floppy new stems usually mean it needs a brighter position.

Keep papyrus consistently wet. This wetland sedge should never dry out at the roots, even in winter.

Spring - summer

Check every day in bright, warm conditions and top up as soon as the soil surface loses its sheen, often every 1-3 days. Water thoroughly, or stand the pot in a shallow saucer with a little water so the root ball stays saturated.

Autumn - winter

Growth slows in cooler, lower light, but the mix should still remain damp to wet. Check every 2-4 days and add water before the top begins to dry. A smaller pot, warm room, sun, or airy soil will make it drink faster.

Do not use pot weight as your only guide: papyrus is happiest when the whole root ball feels moist, not merely damp on top.
Letting papyrus dry out can quickly cause brown tips and collapsing stems. Rehydrate promptly, but trim only growth that stays brown.

50-70%+

Papyrus comes from marshy wetlands, so it is happiest in humid air as well as consistently wet soil. Average home humidity of about 40-50% is usually tolerated if its roots never dry out.

Dry brown leaf tips and crisp, thinning rays usually mean the air is too dry or the plant has dried out at the roots.

In dry, heated rooms

Aim for 50%+

Humidity often drops in winter near radiators and vents. Move the plant away from direct hot air and raise humidity if new growth emerges brown or curled.

How to increase humidity
  • Run a humidifier nearby, especially during the heating season.
  • Group it with other plants or place it in a bright bathroom.
  • Use a pebble tray with water beneath the pot, keeping the pot base above the waterline.

Native to warm African wetlands, papyrus grows best in steady warmth. Keep it in a bright room and away from chilly windows in winter. It tolerates summer heat well when its roots stay consistently wet.

If the room feels cool at night, move papyrus a little farther from the glass and check that temperatures stay above 10°C (50°F).
Cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C (50°F) can cause yellowing and dieback.

March - August

Feed every 2-4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer at about half strength, applied to already wet compost. Papyrus grows quickly in warmth and bright light, but feed less often or pause in winter unless it is still making strong new growth indoors.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen supports the lush green stems and umbrella-like foliage. A regular balanced fertilizer supplies enough without pushing weak, floppy growth.

Never fertilize a dry pot - water first, then feed to protect the roots.

Rich, moisture-holding soil that stays open

Papyrus is a wetland sedge, so its roots prefer consistently saturated soil rather than a fast-draining mix. Use a nutrient-rich potting mix with compost or coir, plus a little perlite or bark to prevent dense compaction.

pH 6,0 - 7,5

This is slightly acidic to neutral soil, which most standard houseplant or pond-plant mixes provide. Avoid strongly acidic mixes and refresh the potting mix if it becomes sour-smelling or tightly compacted.

A pot without drainage can work for papyrus indoors: keep the soil wet and maintain a shallow layer of water around the root zone.
