How to care for Parsley

sunlight

Parsley comes from sunny Mediterranean regions and grows best with plenty of light. Give it the brightest spot you have, especially when growing it indoors for regular picking.

Full sun

Aim for about 6 or more hours of direct sun daily. A south- or west-facing windowsill is usually best indoors. In very hot summers, afternoon shade helps prevent wilting and keeps leaves tender.

If stems stretch and leaves become small or pale, move parsley closer to the window or add a grow light.

watering

Keep parsley evenly moist, but never leave its roots sitting in water.

Active growth

In bright, warm conditions, check every day and water thoroughly about every 2-4 days. Water when the top 1 cm of soil feels dry and the pot is lighter, then let excess drain away. Hot sun, small pots, and leafy harvests make parsley drink faster.

Cooler or low-light months

Growth slows indoors or in cool weather, so watering is often needed about every 5-10 days. Check the same top layer first: do not water on schedule if it is still moist. Dense soil, a large pot, and low light extend the interval.

Water slowly until it runs from the drainage holes, then empty the saucer so the root ball stays moist rather than soggy.
Constantly wet soil can cause yellowing and root rot, especially in cool, low-light conditions.

humidity

Preferred humidity

40-60%

Parsley comes from the Mediterranean, where moving air and moderate humidity are common. Average household humidity is usually fine, as long as the soil does not repeatedly dry out.

Minimum

About 35%

Below this, leaves may develop dry brown edges, look limp between waterings, or grow less vigorously. Warm air from radiators can dry both the leaves and pot quickly.

Keep parsley away from heating vents, and water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry rather than misting the foliage.
  • Group plants together or use a humidifier if indoor air stays very dry.
  • Provide good airflow to help prevent fungal problems on crowded leaves.

temperature

Best growth

15-24°C (59-75°F)

Winter minimum for pots

5°C (41°F)

Parsley is a Mediterranean herb that grows best in mild, cool conditions. It handles cool nights well, but potted roots are less protected than garden plants, so move containers to a sheltered spot before hard frost.

Keep parsley in bright light away from radiators and hot glass, and turn the pot during warm spells for even growth.
Temperatures consistently above 27°C (80°F) can make parsley bolt and turn bitter. Give afternoon shade and keep the soil evenly moist during heat.

nutrition

March - August

Feed container parsley about every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength, especially when harvesting regularly. Parsley in compost-rich garden soil often needs little extra feeding. Stop or reduce feeding in winter unless an indoor plant is still growing and being picked.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen supports the steady production of leafy growth. A balanced fertilizer provides enough without pushing soft, weak growth.

Potassium

Potassium supports overall vigor and helps parsley cope with frequent leaf harvests. It is supplied by a general-purpose balanced feed.

Apply fertilizer to already-moist soil, then water lightly. Flush the pot with plain water if a white crust forms on the soil.

soil

Rich, loose, moisture-retentive soil

Parsley makes a dense root system and grows best in fertile soil that stays evenly moist but never soggy. Use a quality potting mix with compost, and add perlite or coarse sand if it feels heavy or drains slowly.

pH 6,0 - 7,0

This is slightly acidic to neutral, a comfortable range for parsley. Most fresh vegetable or multipurpose potting mixes fall close to it, so there is usually no need to adjust unless you know your soil is very acidic or alkaline.

Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid pressing the mix down hard, as compacted soil can slow leaf growth.
