How to care for Polka Dot Plant
sunlight
In its native Madagascar habitat, polka dot plant grows in warm, filtered light beneath taller plants. Give it bright, indirect light at home to keep the foliage compact and colourful.
Bright indirect light
Place near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a bright south- or west-facing window. Gentle morning sun can be fine, but hot direct sun can scorch the thin leaves and wash out the spotting.
Medium indirect light (tolerated)
It will survive in softer light, but growth may become leggy and pink, red, or white varieties often turn greener. Move it closer to filtered light if the colour fades or stems stretch.
watering
Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, but never waterlog it. Polka Dot Plant wilts quickly when it dries out, yet its fine roots can rot in constantly saturated soil.
Spring — Summer
Water about once or twice a week, when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly until excess drains away, then empty the saucer.
Autumn — Winter
In lower light and cooler rooms, water roughly every 7–10 days. Check the top layer first; let it dry slightly, but do not allow the whole root ball to become dry.
Bright light, warmth, small pots, and airy mixes make soil dry faster; shade, cool temperatures, large pots, and dense soil slow it down.
humidity
Preferred humidity
Native to humid Madagascar, Polka Dot Plant keeps its leaves soft and colorful in moderately humid air. Average homes are usually fine at 40% or higher, but it will look best with a little extra moisture in dry rooms.
How to increase humidity
- Run a small humidifier nearby, especially during heated winter months.
- Group it with other plants or place it in a bright bathroom or kitchen.
- Keep it away from radiators, heating vents, and air-conditioning drafts.
temperature
Preferred temperature
Winter minimum
Native to tropical Madagascar, Polka Dot Plant stays happiest in steady indoor warmth. Growth slows in cool rooms, and prolonged temperatures below 15°C (59°F) can cause leaf drop.
nutrition
Spring through early fall
Feed every 2–4 weeks while your polka dot plant is actively making new leaves. Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half the label strength, applied to already-moist soil.
Balanced nutrition
A regular, even feed supports the compact, colorful foliage. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas, which can encourage soft green growth at the expense of bright spotting.
Winter rest
Stop feeding in winter or when growth slows in cooler, lower-light conditions. Resume when you see steady new growth in spring.
Excess salts
Brown leaf edges, crust on the soil, or sudden drooping after feeding can signal buildup. Flush the pot with water and pause fertilizer for a few weeks.
soil
Light, moisture-retentive, and well-draining
Polka Dot Plant grows in warm, leafy tropical understory, where roots stay evenly moist but have plenty of air. Use a loose indoor potting mix amended with perlite or pumice and a little fine orchid bark or coco coir. It should hold moisture without becoming dense or soggy.
Soil pH
A standard houseplant mix usually falls in this range. Avoid very alkaline soil, which can contribute to pale growth.
