How to care for Ti Plant
sunlight
In tropical forest edges and clearings, Ti Plants receive strong light filtered by leaves. At home, give yours a bright spot with softened sun to keep the foliage colorful and compact.
Bright indirect light
Place near an east window or a few feet back from a south or west window behind a sheer curtain. Variegated and richly colored cultivars need especially bright light to hold their color.
Gentle direct sun
A few hours of mild morning sun is usually suitable once the plant is acclimated. Avoid hot afternoon sun through glass, which can scorch leaves.
watering
Keep Ti Plant lightly and evenly moist, but never leave its roots sitting in water. Let the surface dry a little before watering thoroughly, then empty the saucer.
Spring and summer
Water about every 5-8 days in bright, warm conditions. Check first: the top 1 inch of soil should feel dry while the soil below is still faintly moist.
Fall and winter
Water roughly every 10-14 days as growth slows, only after the top 1-2 inches have dried. Lower light, cool rooms, a large pot, and dense soil all extend the wait.
humidity
Ti Plant comes from warm, humid tropical regions, so it keeps its broad leaves looking best in moderately humid air.
Preferred humidity
It usually adapts to typical indoor humidity around 40%, but prolonged dry air can cause brown, crisp leaf tips and edges, especially on colorful cultivars.
How to increase humidity
- Group it with other plants or use a humidifier nearby.
- Place it on a pebble tray with water, keeping the pot above the waterline.
- Give it good airflow rather than keeping constantly wet leaves.
temperature
Preferred temperature
Winter minimum
Ti Plant comes from warm tropical conditions, so it stays happiest in steady indoor warmth. Keep it away from chilly windows and use a little extra distance from strong heaters, which can dry the leaf edges.
nutrition
March - August
Feed about once a month with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Apply it to moist soil while the plant is making new leaves. Stop feeding in winter, or reduce it if growth slows in lower light.
Nitrogen
Nitrogen supports the broad, colorful foliage. A balanced fertilizer supplies enough without pushing soft, weak growth.
soil
Rich, airy, moisture-retentive soil
Ti Plant likes roots that stay lightly moist but never waterlogged. Use a quality potting mix loosened with perlite or fine orchid bark, and add a little compost or coco coir if it dries very quickly.
pH 6,0 - 6,5
This is slightly acidic soil, which suits this tropical plant. Most houseplant mixes fall close to this range, especially when mixed with bark or coco coir, so no special adjustment is usually needed.
